Zawsze niezadowolony Edgard Degas urodził się w 1834 roku. Chociaż pomagał organizować wystawy impresjonistów i jest okrzyknięty liderem ruchu, nigdy nie uważał się za impresjonistę .
Nie lubił malować „w plenerze”, nie malował też szybkich i pochopnych „impresji” pejzaży i światła. Jego praca była bardziej linearna niż praca pozostałych impresjonistów i spędzał dużo czasu rozmyślając nad swoimi kompozycjami, często zmuszając swoje modelki do siedzenia w niewygodnych pozycjach godzinami. Niemniej jednak jego koncentracja na współczesnym życiu, luźne pociągnięcia pędzla i eksperymentalne kąty nadal umieszczają go w impresjonistycznym momencie.
Jak na kogoś kojarzącego się z elegancją balerin, które często malował, Degas z pewnością mógł malować kobiety w bardzo niezręcznych pozach. W latach 80. XIX wieku wykonał pastelową serię kąpiących się kobiet na ostatnią wystawę impresjonistów w 1886 roku. Choć dość przyziemna i nieromantyczna, wyglądają jego obrazy z tej serii jakby obserwowało się je przez dziurkę od klucza.
