The genome of the SARS-CoV-2 virus isolated by the Gdańsk scientist dr. Has been added to the international database. Łukasz Rąbalski from the Department of Recombinant Vaccines of the Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology of the University of Gdańsk and the Medical University of Gdańsk. The researcher was the first in the country to obtain a full genetic sequence directly from a Polish patient.

This patient was a 48-year-old man who was hospitalized in Gdansk. The material was downloaded at the beginning of April. The work was carried out in the Laboratory of Molecular Biology "Diagnostyka", located in the 7th Navy Hospital in Gdańsk.

After placing the results in the GISAID database, the next stage will be the analysis of these data. According to the researcher, the more data from different parts of the world will be available, the faster it will be possible to plan the composition of the vaccine and drugs, as well as determine what subtype of the virus we are struggling with, where it appeared from, or mutated, etc. Dr. Łukasz Rąbalski is already working on isolating the virus in another 28 patients in Pomerania.
