Nasza wiedza historyczna jest dziurawa jak sito, a przeszłość znacznie bardziej tajemnicza i niejednoznaczna, niż uczymy się w szkole. Badacze epok, w których posługiwano się już pismem, są w trochę lepszej sytuacji niż pradziejowcy, skazani na wyciąganie wniosków z tego, co uda się znaleźć w ziemi. Ale również badania archeologów zajmujących się epokami historycznymi mogą mnóstwo zmienić – w końcu zachowane teksty bywają przesiąknięte propagandą, nie wyjawiają całej prawdy albo ją wykoślawiają. Wykopaliska mogą weryfikować teksty, dostarczać nowych szczegółów i uzupełniać. Często słyszymy o kolejnych sensacyjnych odkryciach – czasami mają one znaczenie lokalne, innym razem globalne. Przy próbie wybrania tych „najważniejszych” bardzo trudno znaleźć obiektywne kryteria. W zasadzie każdy archeolog może mieć swój własny ranking. My postanowiliśmy przedstawić te badania polskich archeologów z ostatnich lat, które z różnych względów stały się kamieniami milowymi w badaniach historii i punktami odniesienia dla reszty naukowego świata. Gdy rozpoczynał tam w 1979 roku wykopaliska, nie spodziewał się, że odkryje „polską Dolinę Królów” o 1500 lat starszą niż ta egipska w Tebach Zachodnich. Na początku badacz nie miał pojęcia, czym jest skomplikowany układ rowów i palisad, które ukazały się po zdjęciu humusu. Dopiero w trzecim sezonie znaleziska ceramiczne pozwoliły zorientować się, że stanowisko należy datować na przełom IV i III tysiąclecia p.n.e. i wiązać z neolityczną kulturą pucharów lejkowatych. Do wykazania, czym jest ta plątanina plam i przebarwień w ziemi, przyczyniły się badania geofizyczne, prowadzone przez Tomasza Herbicha z IAE PAN i Joerga Fassbinndera z Urzędu Konserwatorskiego w Monachium. Wszystko stało się jasne – rowy i palisady okazały się gigantycznymi, ponad stumetrowymi grobowcami z czasów, gdy w Europie dominowała idea megalityczna, a w Egipcie jeszcze nie myślano o budowie piramid. Ponieważ jednak w żyznej okolicy lessowej nie było wystarczających źródeł kamienia, małopolscy konstruktorzy musieli radzić sobie inaczej. W Słonowicach zbudowano wielkie drewniano-ziemne konstrukcje, które miały kształt wydłużonych trapezów. Ich ściany wykonano z drewnianych belek, wnętrze – z wyjątkiem części przy wyjściu – wypełniono ziemią. Do dziś zachowały się jedynie równe rzędy rowów ze śladami po drewnianych słupach (o średnicy 30 cm), które są pozostałościami palisadowych ścian. Wzdłuż dwóch największych grobowców (z sześciu odkopanych) wykopano głębokie na 3 i szerokie na 5 m rowy, z których pobierano ziemię na nasypy. Znajdująca się od strony wschodniej część czołowa największego z grobowców miała szerokość 10 m, a wysokość nasypu mogła dochodzić do 5 m. Niedaleko od wejścia pochowano trzy osoby (tak było tylko w tym grobie, w pozostałych chowano po jednej). Same groby nie były bogato wyposażone, jakby już sama budowa grobowca była wystarczającym darem dla zmarłych. Z pewnością osoby tu pochowane były kimś ważnym. Szkoda, że źle zachowane kości uniemożliwiają wykonanie badań DNA w celu ustalenia pokrewieństwa. Po 100 latach od powstania gigantycznych megaksylonów (mega – wielki, ksylos – drewno) przed i pomiędzy nimi zaczęto chować zmarłych w zwykłych płaskich grobach, jakby w owym czasie cmentarzysko stało się miejscem świętym. Co ciekawe, głowy tych zmarłych (których kości zachowały się trochę lepiej) uniesione były w kierunku wschodzącego słońca, co wiązać się mogło z jakąś religią solarną. Archeolodzy natrafili też na tajemniczy, całkowicie pusty plac – być może o funkcjach ceremonialnych, przeznaczony do zgromadzeń większej grupy ludzi. Przylegał on do największego z grobowców, a z trzech innych stron był otoczony wałami ziemnymi. Nadal nie wiadomo, gdzie mieszkali budowniczowie tego drewniano–ziemnego założenia, gdyż w pobliżu natrafiono tylko na pozostałości osad współczesnych cmentarzysku grobów płaskich. Z pewnością ci, którzy podjęli się tego przedsięwzięcia, musieli być dobrze zorganizowani, gdyż wymagało ono mnóstwa pracy przy kopaniu rowów, ścinaniu drzew i transporcie ogromnych ilości drewna. Po 20 latach prac okazało się, że słonowickie założenie ma fundamentalne znaczenie dla okresu neolitu na ziemiach polskich, ponieważ dowodzi, że zjawisko megalityzmu istniało daleko poza centrum tej idei (Europa Zachodnia). Bo chociaż wiadomo, że również na Śląsku, Sandomierszczyźnie i Lubelszczyźnie wznoszono konstrukcje megalityczne, to Słonowice – jako stanowisko najlepiej przebadane i najprecyzyjniej wydatowane – pozostają punktem odniesienia dla badaczy neolitu w Polsce i Europie. Mimo to nadal nie wiadomo, skąd idea budowy takich megaksylonów przywędrowała do Małopolski (najbliższe budowle tego typu są znane z południowych Niemiec), nie wiadomo też, czy te drewniano-ziemne giganty były tylko grobami, czy może pełniły i inne funkcje. Doktor Tunia nie spoczął na laurach. Przez ostatnie dwa lata prowadzi prace w Rudnie Górnym niedaleko Krakowa. „Mamy tam miniaturkę Słonowic” – mówi. „Dotychczas odsłoniliśmy trzy grobowce mające od kilkunastu do kilkudziesięciu metrów długości, z których jeden jest otoczony małymi kamieniami. When trying to select the "most important" ones, it is very difficult to find objective criteria. In principle, each archaeologist can have his own ranking. We decided to present these studies of Polish archaeologists from recent years, which for various reasons have become milestones in the study of history and points of reference for the rest of the scientific world. Of course, they attract the most attention, but sometimes more modest discoveries are more important. This is best seen in the research of archaeologists in Poland. Well, who would have thought that ordinary stains in the ground and discoloration could lead to such far-reaching conclusions as reached by Dr. Krzysztof Tunia from the Institute of Archeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, who studied the Neolithic site in Słonowice near Kazimierza Wielka. When he began excavations there in 1979, he did not expect to discover the "Polish Valley of the Kings" 1500 years older than the Egyptian one in Western Thebes. At first, the researcher had no idea what the complicated system of ditches and palisades that appeared after removing the humus was. Only in the third season, the ceramic finds made it possible to realize that the site should be dated to the turn of the 4th and 3rd millennium BC. and associated with the Neolithic Funnelbeaker culture. Geophysical research conducted by Tomasz Herbich from IAE PAS and Joerg Fassbinnder from the Conservation Office in Munich contributed to the demonstration of what this tangle of stains and discolorations in the ground is. Everything became clear - the ditches and palisades turned out to be gigantic, over a hundred meters high tombs from the times when Europe was dominated by the megalithic idea, and Egypt had not yet thought about building pyramids. However, as there were not enough stone sources in the fertile loess area, constructors from Lesser Poland had to deal differently. In Słonowice, large wooden and earth structures in the shape of elongated trapeziums were built. Their walls are made of wooden beams, and the interior - with the exception of the part at the exit - is filled with earth. To this day, only even rows of ditches with traces of wooden poles (30 cm in diameter), which are the remains of palisade walls, have been preserved. Along the two largest tombs (out of the six excavated ones), ditches were dug 3 m deep and 5 m wide, from which soil was collected on the embankments. The front part of the largest tomb, located on the eastern side, was 10 m wide, and the embankment height could be up to 5 m. Near the entrance, three people were buried (this was the case only in this grave, in the others one was buried). The tombs themselves were not richly equipped, as if the mere construction of the tomb was a sufficient gift for the dead. Certainly the people buried here were important. It is a pity that poorly preserved bones make it impossible to perform DNA tests to determine kinship. 100 years after the creation of giant megaxillons (mega - great, xylos - wood) in front of and between them, the dead were buried in ordinary flat graves, as if the cemetery had become a holy place at that time. Interestingly, the heads of the dead (whose bones were better preserved) were raised towards the rising sun, which could be related to some solar religion. Archaeologists also found a mysterious, completely empty square - perhaps with ceremonial functions, intended for gatherings of a larger group of people. It adjoined the largest of the tombs, and on three other sides it was surrounded by earth embankments. Still not It is known where the builders of this wood-and-earth complex lived, as only the remains of the settlements of the modern flat graves cemetery were found nearby. Certainly, those who undertook this venture must have been well organized, as it required a lot of work to dig trenches, cut trees, and transport huge amounts of wood. After 20 years of work, it turned out that the Słonowice assumption is of fundamental importance for the Neolithic period in Poland, because it proves that the phenomenon of megalithism existed far beyond the center of this idea (Western Europe). Although it is known that megalithic constructions were also erected in Silesia, the Sandomierz region and the Lublin region, Słonowice - as the most studied and most precisely projected site - remain a reference point for researchers of the Neolithic in Poland and Europe. Nevertheless, it is still unknown where the idea to build such megaxillons came from to Małopolska (the closest buildings of this type are known from southern Germany), and it is not known whether these wood-and-earth giants were only graves or had other functions. Dr. Tunia did not rest on his laurels. For the last two years, he has been working in Rudno Górny near Krakow.
