Żydowskie święto Chanuka też ma związek właśnie z tą datą. Stare, pogańskie święta zostały wyparte. Ale zwyczaje po przodkach zostały, choć wiele osób nie ma tej świadomości, dlaczego kupują choinkę i ją ozdab. Nam się, że choinka, makowiec, jemioła to stare tradycje chrześcijańskie. Wieszano je pod sufitem, ozdabiano zabawkami ze słomy, ciasta, wstążkami, a także jemiołą, miały ustroić chatę czy dom na ważne święto. Symbolizowały ciągłość Życia. Ten czas na półkuli północnej to czas kultu solarnego. W Rzymie obchodzono wówczas Saturnalia. Święto zbiegało się z przesileniem zimowym, w którym moment dni znowu zaczęły się wydłużać, kończąc okres „ciemności” i otwierając drogę do coraz większej radości ze słońca.
